  1. Instrument should be in good working condition.
  2. Pre-tape yourself daily at least one month in advance.
  3. Acquaint yourself with the actual orchestral part and the score.
  4. Listen to several good recordings of each excerpt and play with them in order to hear the harmonies and rhythms involved.
  5. Play the excerpts with your section colleagues to establish pitches and rhythms.
  6. Condition your body as well; exercising, plenty of rest, eating properly, etc.
  7. Play frequently for your peers and colleagues, and not necessarily those in the same instrument category as you.
